Health and Safety in the Kitchen
Before you start remember:
-Tie long hair up
-Wash your hands
-Remove dangling Jewellery
-Never cook in loose clothing
-Put on an apron
-Never store raw meat or poultry together
-Don’t let temperature sensitive foods like dairy products or fish sit around
-If in doubt whether a ingredient is off or not throw it away
-Wash all fruit and vegetables in case of contamination
While your cooking:
-Clean up as you go along leaving pots and pans around can be dangerous
-Wipe up all spills immediately
-Wash your hands after handling any raw meat or poultry
-Never leave cooking food unattended
-Never leave cooking food unattended
-Always cut away from your body in case it slips
- Use a chopping board
-Wash your knives
-Sharpen your knives frequently
-If you drop your knife don’t try and catch it
-When putting a knife down lay it flat
After cooking:
- Make sure all appliances are turned off
- Cover food if not being eaten immediately
- Return all left over ingredients
- Clean up
- Don’t leave knives in soapy water as accidents can easily happen
- Don’t refreeze defrosted food
In case of emergency
-Write down all emergency phone numbers of fire and poison control
-Have plasters (Band-Aids) and antibacterial wipes at the ready in case of a cut
-Have a plan in case of a fire and invest in a fire blanket or fire extinguisher
